@ Salt Gallery, Queenscliff
German-born, Melbourne-based Katrin Koenning is an artist with a particular interest in our emotional and physical connection to place and to that which surrounds us. Working with still and moving images, much of her work is concerned with ways in which place is personally known, experienced or felt according to how something is seen, and how the experience or reading of place may change by ways of altering vision.
For her exhibition at SALT Contemporary, Koenning was commissioned by Queenscliff's Low Light Festival to create new work, documenting the region. The images seek to offer a counter-narrative to expected representations of Queenscliff's seaside identity, allowing the place to unfold as it may, quietly, marked by the melancholy one may encounter when one stands by the ocean for long.
